Ask most drivers to name the lights on their car and you’ll get three answers: headlights, brake lights, blinkers. The real count is closer to twenty separately-regulated exterior lamp positions, each with its own legal job, its own required color, and — critically for anyone buying parts — its own bulb number.

That’s why “what bulb does my car take?” is an unanswerable question as asked. There is no one bulb. There’s a low beam bulb, a high beam bulb, possibly a separate DRL bulb, a front position lamp, two different turn signal bulbs, a side marker, a fog lamp, and six more at the back — and getting the right one means knowing which position you’re replacing first.

The one rule that saves you money. Every bulb has its number moulded into the base or printed on the glass. Pull the old one out and read it. That number — not a chart, not a forum post, not a listing title — is the authoritative answer for your vehicle.

Two things trip people up here. First, the DRL is frequently not its own bulb — on a large share of vehicles it’s the high beam run at reduced voltage, which means “my DRL is out” can mean “my high beam bulb is dead.” Second, the amber turn signal bulbs (3157A, 7443NA, 1157NA) are the same base as their clear counterparts with amber-coated glass; the amber comes from the bulb, not the lens, on any housing with a clear front lens.

Trucks, vans and anything over 80 inches wide

Wide vehicles carry a whole extra tier of lighting that passenger cars don’t, and it’s a legal requirement above 80 inches of overall width in the US — not a styling choice:

  • Cab identification lamps — the row of three amber lamps centred on the roof, spaced 6–12 inches apart. Almost always 194/168 wedge bulbs.
  • Cab clearance lamps — the outer amber lamps at the roof corners marking the vehicle’s extreme width. Same small wedge bulbs.
  • Front and rear clearance / side marker lamps — amber at the front, red at the rear, on the body corners.
  • Intermediate side marker lamps — required on vehicles over 30 feet long, amber, at the midpoint.
  • Cargo / bed lamps — not federally required, usually 194 or a festoon, and the easiest LED upgrade on the vehicle.
  • Trailer lighting — a 4-pin flat connector carries tail, left turn/brake, right turn/brake and ground; a 7-pin RV blade adds electric brakes, 12V auxiliary and reverse. A dead trailer circuit is far more often a corroded connector or a failed converter module than a bulb.

If your half-ton pickup is under 80 inches and came without roof lamps, adding them is cosmetic — but if it came with them, they have to work.

Interior lighting

Rarely regulated, frequently ignored, and the cheapest visible upgrade on the whole vehicle:

Two practical notes: interior wedge and festoon bulbs are directional once you go LED — an LED with emitters on one face will light the headliner and not the seat if you install it the wrong way round, so test before you clip the lens back on. And modern cluster backlighting is usually surface-mount LEDs soldered to the board, not replaceable bulbs.

The parts that aren’t bulbs

This is the layer people forget, and it’s where most “the bulb is new and it still doesn’t work” problems actually live:

  • Socket — the receptacle the bulb sits in. Fails by corrosion (green contacts) or heat (brown, melted plastic). A melted socket is the single most common cause of an intermittent brake or tail lamp.
  • Pigtail / connector — the short plug behind the socket. Sold separately from the assembly on most vehicles, which makes it a cheap fix.
  • Wiring harness and ground point — a corroded ground behind a tail lamp produces the classic symptom where one lamp dims when another comes on.
  • Flasher relay — measures turn-signal current to detect a burnt bulb. This is what causes hyperflash after an LED swap.
  • HID ballast and igniter — steps 12V up to strike and sustain an arc. Sold separately from the bulb; a flickering or color-shifting xenon is usually one of these, not the capsule. See LED vs HID headlights.
  • LED driver module — the current regulator inside an LED assembly or bulb. On sealed factory LED headlights it often isn’t serviceable, which is why a failed one means an assembly.
  • Body control module (BCM) / lighting module — on modern cars the switch on the stalk is an input, not a power path. A dead lamp with good bulb, socket and fuse points here.

Where to buy which part

The two marketplaces genuinely serve different halves of this list, and knowing which is which saves both money and returns:

Amazon — consumables and universal parts. Bulbs of every base type, LED conversion kits, fog bulbs, anti-flicker decoders, load resistors, relay harnesses, flasher relays, restoration kits. These aren’t vehicle-specific body parts; they’re numbered components that fit thousands of cars, so the new-parts market is the right one. Browse bulbs, LED headlights, fog lights, wiring harnesses and sealed beam.

eBay Motors — vehicle-specific assemblies and OEM hardware. Headlight and tail light assemblies, side marker and parking lamp housings, third brake lamps, cab clearance lamps, adjuster hardware, connectors and pigtails, factory ballasts and control modules. These are model- and trim-specific with model-specific connectors, and a used OEM unit from a salvaged car is the same part your vehicle left the factory with — correct fitment, correct connector, correct lens shape. For anything older or lower-volume that’s no longer stocked new, it’s frequently the only source.

Colour rules worth knowing before you modify anything

Not legal advice — enforcement varies by state and country — but these are near-universal in the US and broadly mirrored elsewhere:

  • Forward-facing lamps must be white or amber. No red, no blue, no green facing forward. This is the rule that catches most tinted or coloured-bulb builds.
  • Rearward-facing lamps must be red, with the single exception of reverse lamps, which must be white.
  • Side markers are amber at the front, red at the rear.
  • The license plate lamp must be white and must actually illuminate the plate.
  • Turn signals must be amber or red at the rear, amber at the front in the US.
  • Tint film and smoked overlays that drop a lamp below its required output make it non-compliant even if the colour still reads correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lights does a car actually have?
More than most people guess. A typical modern passenger car carries roughly eighteen to twenty-four separately-functioning exterior lamps once you count both sides: low beams, high beams, daytime running lights, front position/parking lamps, front and rear turn signals, front and rear side markers, fog lamps, tail lamps, brake lamps, a centre high-mount third brake lamp, reverse lamps and at least one license plate lamp. Add interior lighting — dome, map, courtesy, footwell, glovebox, cargo and instrument backlighting — and the total climbs well past thirty. Each exterior position is regulated separately for color, position and brightness, which is why you can't freely swap one for another.
What's the difference between a parking light and a daytime running light?
They do different jobs even though they often sit in the same housing. A front position (parking) lamp is a low-intensity white or amber lamp meant to mark a stationary or parked vehicle's width — it comes on with the first click of the light switch and stays on with the headlights. A daytime running light is a brighter forward-facing lamp designed to make a moving car conspicuous in daylight; it switches on automatically with the engine and, on most systems, dims or switches off when the headlights come on. On many vehicles the DRL is a dimmed high beam, a dimmed low beam, or a dedicated LED strip rather than its own replaceable bulb — check before you buy anything.
What bulb does a license plate light take?
Almost always a small T10 wedge bulb — number 194 or 168 in US numbering, W5W in the European system — and the three are close enough that they share the same socket. Some vehicles use a 31mm or 36mm festoon instead (numbers like 6418 or DE3175), which is a cylindrical bulb with a metal cap at each end. Pull the lamp and look: a wedge bulb has a flat glass base that pushes straight into the socket, a festoon clips between two spring contacts. Either way, the plate lamp must emit white light, and a burnt one is a real ticketable offence in most US states.
Why does one part of my dashboard or door light not work when the bulb is fine?
Because the bulb is only one part of the circuit. The parts that fail nearly as often are the socket (corroded or heat-melted contacts), the pigtail connector behind it, the ground point, the fuse, and — on newer vehicles — the body control module channel that drives the lamp. A dead lamp with a good bulb is a wiring or control problem, not a lighting problem. Check the fuse first, then look inside the socket for green corrosion or brown heat discoloration, which are the two most common physical causes.
Are the extra lights on the roof of a truck required?
It depends on the vehicle's width, not on preference. US federal standards require cab clearance and identification lamps — typically the five-lamp amber cluster across the roof, plus corner clearance lamps — on vehicles over 80 inches wide. Most half-ton pickups are under that width, so those roof lamps are a styling addition rather than a requirement, and dually and commercial trucks over the limit genuinely need them. If your truck came with them, they have to work; if it didn't, adding them is cosmetic. They almost always use small 194/168 wedge bulbs, which makes an LED swap easy.
Can I convert every light on my car to LED?
Technically most of them, but three positions deserve caution. Turn signals will hyperflash unless you fit an LED-compatible flasher relay or load resistors, because the circuit reads the lower current draw as a burnt-out bulb. Reflector-housing headlights are fussy — only a bulb with true 1:1 halogen chip geometry focuses cleanly, and a mismatched one scatters glare. And anything on a CANbus-monitored circuit can throw a bulb-out warning. Interior lamps, license plate lamps, markers and reverse lamps are the easy wins with almost no downside beyond picking a color temperature that matches the rest of the car.
What are the non-bulb parts of a car's lighting system?
The parts that actually break most often. Each lamp has a socket and a pigtail connector; groups of lamps share a wiring harness and a ground point; turn signals run through a flasher relay; HID systems need a ballast and igniter; LED assemblies contain a driver module; headlights carry aiming adjusters, mounting tabs and a rubber seal; and on modern cars a body control module or dedicated lighting module switches everything. Aftermarket LED conversions add their own parts too — anti-flicker decoders, load resistors, relay harnesses. When a lamp misbehaves and the bulb tests good, one of these is the culprit.
