Cloudy, yellowed headlights are one of the most common — and most fixable — problems on any older vehicle. They don’t just look tired; a hazed lens scatters and blocks a big chunk of your bulbs’ output, so you’re driving with far less light than you think, and it quietly drags down resale value. The question almost everyone asks is the right one: do I restore the hazy housing, or replace it? This guide gives you a clear decision rule, then shows you how to do whichever one your headlights actually need.
Why headlights go cloudy in the first place
Modern headlight lenses aren’t glass — they’re polycarbonate plastic with a thin factory UV-protective coating sprayed on top. That coating is a consumable. Years of sun, heat, road grit, car-wash chemicals, and bug spatter wear it away, and once it’s gone the bare plastic underneath oxidizes: first a light haze, then a yellow cast, then a chalky, sandpaper-rough surface.
The key insight is that this is almost always surface UV damage on the outside of the lens. That’s why restoration works — you’re sanding off the dead, oxidized layer and sealing fresh plastic. It’s also why restoration doesn’t work when the real problem is inside the housing. Nailing that distinction is the whole decision.

The simple version: if the damage is on the surface and the housing is otherwise sound, restore it — it’s cheap and fast. If the damage is internal, or the housing has physically failed, or you want better light than the original ever made, replace it. Restoration is a cosmetic and optical fix for the lens; it can’t repair a housing that has failed on the inside.
How restoration actually works (and why cheap fixes fail)
You’ll see viral “toothpaste” and “bug-spray” hacks. They can make a lens look better for a few days by filling the haze with a temporary film — but they skip the one step that matters, and the haze comes back fast. A restoration that lasts follows a real sequence:
- Mask the surrounding paint with tape so your sandpaper never touches it.
- Wet-sand in stages — typically 800 → 1000 → 1500 → 2000+ grit — to cut off the oxidized layer and progressively refine the surface. Keep it wet the whole time.
- Polish the sanded lens clear with a plastic compound (by hand or with a buffer).
- Seal with a dedicated UV-blocking clear coat or sealant. This is the entire game. Bare polished polycarbonate re-oxidizes within weeks; a proper UV sealant is what buys you 1–3 years before the sun breaks it down again.

Replace — don’t restore — when any of these are true:

- A cracked lens or broken mounting tab. Structural damage can’t be polished out, and a headlight that won’t aim or seal is a safety and MOT/inspection problem.
- A burnt or peeling reflector. The mirrored surface behind the bulb is what forms your beam. Once it’s discolored or flaking, output and pattern are gone for good.
- You want more light. If you’re going to spend the time anyway, a modern LED assembly or projector housing gives you a brighter, whiter, better-controlled beam than a restored 15-year-old reflector ever will.
