If your vehicle still runs sealed beam headlights, you are driving on 1940s–1980s lighting technology — dim, yellowish, and prone to fading. Sealed beams were the only headlight the US allowed from 1940 until the rules changed in 1983, per Wikipedia’s headlamp entry. The good news: sealed beams were built to a handful of DOT-standardized sizes, so a modern LED sealed-beam replacement drops right into the original bucket and plugs into the factory connector. What “sealed beam” actually means

A sealed beam is a self-contained lamp: the lens, reflector, and filament are fused into one sealed glass unit. There is no removable bulb — when it dies, you replace the whole thing. That standardization is exactly why the upgrade is so clean today. Because the outer shape and the 3-prong connector were fixed by DOT decades ago, an LED unit built to the same 7-inch round, 5x7/7x6, 4x6, or 5-3/4-inch round spec bolts straight in.

This is a different (and much easier) job than a modern reflector-housing swap. You are not retrofitting an LED bulb into a halogen housing — you are replacing a complete, DOT-standard lamp with a complete, DOT-standard LED lamp.

Sealed beam size & shape reference

Match by shape first, then dimension. The code is usually molded into the old lens; if not, measure the opening.

The single vs. quad distinction matters. A vehicle with two headlights per side (quad system) uses a low/dual outer lamp and a high-beam-only inner lamp — buy the correct one for each position, or the inner lamps won’t light on low beam (that’s normal) and you’ll mismatch the set.

The three upgrade paths by size family

7-inch round (H6024) — Jeeps, classics & bikes

The most common single-lamp-per-side sealed beam. This is the Jeep Wrangler and CJ crowd, air-cooled VWs, Land Cruisers, older pickups, and a huge range of motorcycles and tractors. A 7” round LED is the highest-impact, easiest upgrade in the sealed-beam world — one lamp per side, three-prong plug, done.

5x7 / 7x6 rectangular (H6054) — square-body trucks

The workhorse rectangular size. If you run a square-body Chevy/GMC, a Ford F-Series, a Jeep Cherokee XJ, an S-10, a Blazer, or a Bronco of the right era, you almost certainly need 5x7 (also called 7x6). One lamp per side, dual filament.

4x6 rectangular & 5-3/4 round — quad systems

Four-lamp vehicles split the job: the outer lamps run low/dual beam, the inner lamps are high-beam-only. Match each position — 4x6 uses codes like H4656 (outer) and H4651 (inner); 5-3/4 round uses 5006/4000 (outer) and 5001 (inner). Buy them as a coordinated set so color and output match across all four.

Legality, beam pattern & aiming

The knock on cheap LED conversions — blinding oncoming drivers — comes from throwing raw LED light through a reflector never designed for it. Sealed-beam-shaped LEDs sidestep much of that because they replace a complete DOT-standard lamp and are engineered to hold a defined cutoff. To stay on the right side of it:

• Buy DOT-approved units with a real DOT stamp and a proper low-beam cutoff.
• Aim them after installing. Park 25 feet from a wall and set the bright zone just below headlight height — this is the step most people skip.

Installation & wiring

Sealed beam replacement is genuinely one of the easiest jobs on the vehicle:

1. Remove the trim bezel (a few screws).
2. Unscrew the retaining ring — leave the spring-loaded aim screws alone so you keep your baseline.
3. Pull the old sealed beam and unplug the 3-prong connector.
4. Plug the new LED lamp into the same connector and reassemble.
5. Check aim against a wall.

Most units plug into the factory H4 / 3-prong connector and simply work. A minority of vehicles — those that route headlight power through a body module, or that flag the lower current draw of LEDs — can show flicker, dimming, or a bulb-out warning.
