It’s one of the most common — and most misunderstood — problems with an LED conversion, and it almost never means the bulbs are bad. This guide explains exactly why it happens and gives you a clear fix ladder, so you spend money once on the right part instead of guessing.

Why LED headlights flicker or throw errors

Halogen bulbs and LED bulbs behave very differently on the same circuit, and modern cars are watching that circuit closely. Two mechanisms cause nearly all flicker and warning problems:

  1. CANbus bulb detection. Many late-model and European vehicles constantly check whether each bulb is working by sending a small pulse of current down the wire and measuring what comes back. A halogen filament draws a big, predictable current, so the computer sees “bulb OK.” An LED draws a fraction of that power — so the computer either can’t detect it, reads a fault, or pulses the circuit trying to test it. That pulsing is the flicker, and a detected “fault” is the bulb-out warning.
  2. Underpowered or PWM-dimmed circuits. Some vehicles (and many older trucks) don’t feed the headlight a clean, full-voltage signal. 2. Add an anti-flicker decoder / warning canceller

If your bulbs aren’t CANbus-ready — or you have one of the stubborn vehicles where even CANbus bulbs still throw a warning — add a small anti-flicker decoder (also called a warning canceller or capacitor module). It plugs in-line between the bulb and the factory connector and adds just enough load/smoothing that the computer sees a “normal” bulb. Decoders are sold in pairs, are usually plug-and-play, and are the correct fix for a CANbus warning that survives good bulbs. 3. Load resistors — the blunt instrument

4. Relay wiring harness — for underpowered circuits

If your problem is dim, unstable, or pulsing output rather than a dash warning, the issue is power delivery, and no decoder will fix it.
